چکیده

We use a multiannulus accretion code to investigate debris disks in the terrestrial zone, at 0.7–1.3 AU around a 1 M⊙ star. Terrestrial planet formation produces a bright dusty ring of debris with a lifetime of & 10 yr. The early phases of terrestrial planet formation are observable with current facilities; the late stages require more advanced instruments with adaptive optics. Subject headings: planetary systems – solar system: formation – stars: formation – circumstellar matter

Prospects for Detection of Catastrophic Collisions in Debris Disks

We investigate the prospects for detecting dust from two body collisions during the late stages of planet formation at 1–150 AU. We develop an analytic model to describe the formation of a dusty cloud of debris and use numerical coagulation and n-body calculations to predict observable signals from these events. In a minimum mass solar nebula, collisions of 100–1000 km objects at distances of 3...

Residual Gas and Dust around Transition Objects and Weak T Tauri Stars

Residual gas in disks around young stars can spin down stars, circularize the orbits of terrestrial planets, and whisk away the dusty debris that is expected to serve as a signpost of terrestrial planet formation. We have carried out a sensitive search for residual gas and dust in the terrestrial planet region surrounding young stars ranging in age from a few to ∼10Myr. Using high-resolution 4....

Terrestrial Zone Debris Disk Candidates in H and Χ Persei

We analyze 8 sources with strong mid-infrared excesses in the 13 Myr-old double cluster h and χ Persei. New optical spectra and broadband SEDs (0.36-8 μm) are consistent with cluster membership. We show that material with T∼300-400 K and Ld/L⋆ ∼10 -10 produces the excesses in these sources. Optically-thick blackbody disk models including those with large inner holes do not match the observed SE...

Dust to Dust : Evidence for Planet Formation ?

We discuss the properties of several circumstellar debris disk systems imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope’s Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer in a survey of young stars with known far-IR excesses. These dusty disks around young (∼ 5–8 Myr) unembedded stars exhibit morphological anisotropies and other characteristics which are suggestive of recent or on-going planet formatio...
